Emotional Granularity:
Getting more specific about how we feel
We often describe our emotions broadly — saying we’re sad or surprised. But sometimes, it helps to go deeper.
What we call surprised might actually be shocked or startled. What we call sad might be lonely or disappointed.
Noticing these subtle differences helps us understand what’s happening inside us, and talk about our feelings more clearly with others.
This is called emotional granularity: the ability to describe our emotions with more detail. And the more clearly we name what we’re feeling, the easier it becomes to process and regulate it.
